Elements of Art Non Objective Paintings

Students in Painting and Advanced Painting created a non objective painting using acrylic paint and mixed media elements such as fabric and tissue paper. The goal was to showcase all elements of art (color, texture, value, line, space and shape- we left out form since we were working within a 2-D space) within their painting. Students viewed artwork by the famous Russian painter Wassily Kandinsky to see how he used the elements to create nonobjective paintings. This project was the first project this year in painting and gave students the chance to play around with the acrylic paint, palette knife painting, using gloss medium and impasto paste. Students in 11th period drawing completed miniature self-portraits in charcoal before beginning on their final self-portraits. Students focused on looking for values throughout their face and using the charcoal to blend and shade these values. Don't they look fantastic?!

Art is SWEET

In honor of Halloween, the Painting and Drawing classes each completed a "sweet" sketch. The painting classes used watercolors and painted m&ms from observation. The Drawing class drew oreo cookies from observation with the media of their choice. Both classes ate their subjects when their sketches were complete!

Red Cup!

Grisaille Paintings

Twig Drawings-Finding beauty in simple objects

Students in 11th period drawing class completed a close observational study of a simple twig. Using charcoal, a q-tip and an eraser, students completed large value drawings of the twigs. Students concentrated on the highlights and shadows found on the twigs and also the textures on the twig.

Students also completed a small ink drawing of their twig. Students used India ink on watercolor paper.

Value Egg Paintings

The painting class have been practicing value paintings. Students first drew from observation a value sketch of an egg on a white tissue. Next they transferred their sketch onto watercolor paper and used acrylic paint to match their sketch's values.

After the paint is dry, students used gloss medium and any acrylic color to glaze over the surface of their paintings. A glaze is a transparent layer of color.

Nature Drawings

Students in the drawing class were to draw 3 nature objects from observation. Before beginning the drawing students created a ground on their paper by shading it lightly with a #2 pencil. The nature objects were drawn on top of the ground. Highlights were taken out with an eraser and shadows were created by shading areas.

For our first "real" drawing project we will be doing a collection of nature drawings from observation. Students will need to draw at least 7 different nature objects and use at least three different drawing media.
